How Long Do Car Brakes Last?

Mechanic Working On Brakes

Every Surrey driver will have to replace their brakes at some point. It’s inevitable. So, how long do car brakes last or, more precisely, how many kilometres do brakes last? Most experts say that brakes on average should last between 40,000 and 105,000 kilometres. Our service department wants to help keep you safe on our roads, so we’ve put together the guide below on how long you can expect to keep using your brakes safely.

How Many Kilometres Do Brakes Last on Average?

It’s good to have some idea of how long you can expect your brakes to last so that you can be prepared before there is a problem. So, how long do car brakes last on our Langley roads on average? As we’ve said, the average range is between 40,000 and 105,000 kilometres.

Of course, that depends on driving conditions, driving behaviour, and the quality of the brakes themselves. Some high quality brake pads have been known to last nearly 200,000 kilometres or even more, but that’s very rare. Here are some factors that affect how long car brakes last:

  • Do you tend to brake hard, or gradually come to a stop?
  • Do you drive mostly on the highway, or in stop-and-go White Rock traffic?
  • Do you drive in flat areas, or on hilly roads?
  • Do you haul or tow heavy loads?

Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Brakes

You should take action as soon as you start to notice signs your brakes are starting to wear. How long do brakes last after you start to hear them squeal or notice some other problem? Not very long, unfortunately. If you hear your brakes making a noise or experience any of the things listed below, make an appointment with our service centre right away:

  • There is a squealing noise when the brakes are applied
  • You have to push the brake pedal further down than usual to come to a stop
  • It takes longer for the car to come to a complete stop
  • The brake light comes on (don’t wait for this to happen!)
