History of the Mercedes-Benz Logo

The first iteration of Mercedes-Benz was founded by Gottlieb Daimler in 1890. The company was swiftly taken over by Emil Jellinek and Wilhelm Maybach, and named Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), but Daimler’s two sons, Adolf and Paul, played important roles in shaping the vision of the company. In fact, they developed the first version of the Mercedes-Benz logo. Its origins are highly personal…and specific.

The Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star references a postcard that they received from their father in 1872. The postcard featured an image of a map that features a 3-pointed star marking the location of their hometown on it. GMG bought the rights to the 3-pointed star graphic, and has continued to implement and refine it for over a century. The first star was blue, but in 1926, a laurel border was added. In 1934, the icon adopted its famously silver hue.

Mercedes-Benz Logo Meaning

The logo obviously pays tribute to the brand’s origin, the Daimler family. According to Mercedes-Benz officials, however, the Mercedes-Benz 3-pointed star has a less obvious meaning. The star represents the company’s ambition for innovating motorization in each environment–Sea, Air, and Land. Naturally, Mercedes-Benz has settled for being one of the greatest auto designers in history, but at the turn of the century, the Daimler brothers were keen to expand into aircraft design and shipbuilding.

The Mercedes-AMG® Logo Meaning

The Mercedes-AMG® logo is significantly more detailed than the mainline Mercedes-Benz logo. Split in two, the left side features an illustration of a valve, valve spring, and cam shaft. These are engine parts that point to the history of Mercedes-AMG® as the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. As for the right side, it features the coat of arms for the town of Affalterbach, Germany, where Mercedes-AMG® is located—the coat of arms features an apple tree along a river.
